October is the American Pharmacist Month. The UB APhA-ASP Chapter is trying to raise awareness about all aspects of the evolving pharmacy profession through a fun yet marketable social media campaign. The goal is to create a strong social media presence to spread the word about American Pharmacists Month (APhM). We are encouraging students to participate to bring attention and recognition to the profession.
The event we have for the month is to take picture related to Pharmacy and tag APhA Instagram and Facebook accounts. Using Hashtags #APhM2016 & #UBAPhA.

During the Annual Meeting, the discussed Policies are listed below:
1. Increasing the Security of Pharmacies.
APhA-ASP calls upon all stakeholders to take measures that create an environment that prioritizes the safety and security of patients and pharmacy personnel. These include:
- The development and implementation of strategies and technologies to deter pharmacy robberies, such as time delayed safes, panic buttons, stock bottle tracking devices, physical pharmacy design, and video surveillance.
- The development and implementation of relevant procedures and programs to train all personnel on actions to take during a pharmacy robbery.
2. Pharmacist Administration of Injectable Medications
- APhA-ASP supports pharmacists and student pharmacists administering non-vaccine injectables, including but not limited to, antipsychotics, long-acting contraceptives, and other hormone therapy pursuant to prescription, protocol, or collaborative agreement.
- APhA-ASP supports the development of programs to properly train pharmacists and student pharmacists to administer non-vaccine injectables, such as continuing education and certificate training programs.
- APhA-ASP encourages all stakeholders, including but not limited to, pharmacies, health-systems, and third party payors, to develop a sustainable viable compensation model for pharmacist administration of non-vaccine injectables.
3. Establishing Immunization Requirements
- APhA-ASP affirms the valuable role immunizations play in protecting the public and strongly recommends all persons receive immunizations currently recommended by the CDC, except when medically contraindicated.
- APhA-ASP recommends all private and public educational or child-care institutions require enrollees and employees to receive all CDC-recommended immunizations, except when medically contraindicated.
- APhA-ASP strongly affirms that the professional responsibility of all health care personnel to receive CDC-recommended immunizations and supports their employers mandating immunizations as a condition of employment, volunteering, or training, except when medically contraindicated.
4. Increasing Patient Access to Pharmacist-Prescribed Medications
- APhA-ASP encourages legislative and regulatory changes that would enable pharmacists, with appropriate training and working as integral members of the health care team, to access the patient and prescribe certain medication such as those for contraception, tobacco cessation, and international travel.
- APhA-ASP encourages the development of sustainable and financially viable compensation models for pharmacist- prescribed medications.

APhA-ASP Operation Diabetes is holding this year SkyZone event on November 18th from 5pm to 8pm at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park (425 Cayuga Road #400 Cheektowaga, NY 14225). The ticket is $16.50 and you can get a pair of SkyZone socks (required) and jump around for 90 minutes. Tickets go on sale through the SBI ticket office and the online SBI ticket website (https://tickets.subboard.com/) on November 3rd. Attendees must fill out a SkyZone waiver which can be done by using the following link: https://buffalostore.skyzone.com/waiver/. The proceeds from this year's SkyZone event go to benefit APhA-ASP to help fund activities such as future travel reimbursement. We would truly love to see you all there!

APhA-ASP/IPSF is hosting our annual Cultural Night Dinner and Raffle Fundraiser TODAY, Friday, October 9th, from 6-9pm at South Lake Village Community Center on the North Campus. We will have many cultural dishes donated by 15 local restaurants that are listed in the menu attached! In addition to having a variety of food, we will be holding a raffle where you can have the chance to win a study basket and gift cards, etc. Plus, we will be having calligraphy and Henna tattoo session. Due to SBI policy change, tickets price is going up to $5.50; tickets are available at the door. Participants who bring in a dish from a local restaurant or come in cultural attire will receive an extra raffle ticket! We hope to see you there!

Thank you for participating the APhA-ASP Health Fair.
Due to class cancellations on Sept. 9th 2015, the APhA-ASP First General Body Meeting will be rescheduled Wednesday, Sept. 16th 2015 at 7pm in K190. Food will be provided. Once again, it is a good opportunity for you to learn how to get involved with APhA-ASP in different ways. It is a great way to gain leadership experience and meet different people. Want to learn about smoking cessation? Operation Heart in conjunction with Operation Self-Care will be hosing UB Wellness Services for a smoking cessation training session. With this training, you will learn, Stages of Change and smoking cessation, The Motivational Interviewing approach to working with patients, The Solution Focused approach to working with patients, Tips for smoking cessation consultation sessions, Key questions to ask to create a quit smoking plan,Creating smoking cessation strategies, and Explaining nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) options. Once the training is complete, you will be able to work with UB Wellness to help students on campus quit smoking and we will be setting up future wellness clinics on this topic.
The event is November 6 (Thursday) from 9am-11am. (Students CANNOT earn IPPE hours).

Generation-Rx is presenting at Orchard Park High School on Thursday November 7th during their health classes about prescription drug abuse. Their school day is 7:25am till 1:50pm. Depending on how long you stay, this can grant you 7 hours of non-core credit!

The APhA-ASP Student-Faculty Auction will be held this year at Transit Lanes from 9-11pm on February 27th. So far we have gotten some really great items to auction off. HERE is the list of items thus far. Come join us to bid on some amazing items and enjoy a night off from schoolwork! This is a great way to get to know the faculty and staff members, as well as students that you may not have had the chance to meet yet.
Furthermore, you may begin purchasing tickets NOW! Laure Bielecki, from the P1 class, Tyler Mullen, from the P2 class, and Caitlin Frohnapple, from the P3 class, will have tickets available. Congratulations to Andrew Newberg and Tommy Steele for winnting our chapter's T-shirt design contest! This design will be submitted as our chapter's entry to the national APhA-ASP contest. The national winning design will be sold at the APhA Book Store during the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition. The winning chapter will have their design featured in Student Pharmacist magazine and be recognized during the annual meeting. The chapter will also receive one complimentary student registration for the meeting and 5 complimentary t-shirts featuring their design. Good job, guys!

The winner of our chapter's local T-Shirt design contest will be submitted as our chapter's entry to the national APhA-ASP contest. The winner will also receive a gift card to Tim Hortons! The national winning design will be produced and sold at APhA Annual Meeting, and proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to a chosen charity organization.

APhA-ASP is excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for our new position this year, the P1 Patient Care Project Committee Leader. We have developed this position to give more P1 students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and become active within the organization. Five P1 students will be selected to help schedule and facilitate interest meetings for each of our patient care projects by working closely with our current project chairs. While this position does not guarantee a future leadership position within APhA-ASP, it is a great way to learn the ropes of the patient care projects and the organization as a stepping stone to leadership opportunities. APhA-ASP will be holding its local Counseling Compatition on October 23rd (first round) and on November 20th (second round), both starting at 6:00pm. APhA-ASP is hosting a DOUBLE ELIMINATION INTERPROFESSIONAL KAN JAM TOURNAMENT!
When: Saturday September 28th 2:00pm
Where: Elicott Creek Park
Who: Med, dental, pharmacy, nursing and pt students are invited
Cost: $5 per person
Tickets: Purchased by emailing email@example.com or online through the SBI office HERE.
Whats at stake: A large trophy passed annually between the schools to be engraved with the names of the winners, and bragging rights of course
What to bring: Just you, food if you'd like to cook out and drinks. No liquor is permitted in the park!

The Policy Committee is holding a meeting this Thursday, September 26th at 4 PM in the Lounge. Pizza will be provided! This meeting is mandatory for anyone attending MRM.
Also, we just changed our display box that used to hold "cupping" equipments to APhA-ASP's informational board in preparation for October's American Pharmacists Month. Check it out on the second floor next to the faculty hallway!

This year's Cultural Night will be on Monday, September 23rd from 7:30 to 10:00 PM at South Lake Village Community Center on North Campus. Every year student pharmacists, faculty, and staff join forces to cook and ask local restaurants to donate for this annual fundraising event. Tickets will be available for $5 pre-sale the week before the event and also $5 at the door the night of the event. The night will feature a raffle as well as food donated by students, faculty, and local area restaurants.
We are asking APhA-ASP members and non-members to donate food to Cultural Night. If you can cook a cultural dish and bring it to the event on 9/23, please sign up using the Google Spreadsheet below. Thank you!

The next General Body Meeting will be held on Monday, 9/16 at 6 pm in K183. We will talk more about Cultural Night that's coming up (9/23 @ 7:30pm), and you can talk to PCP chairs and other VPs for more info about our projects. If you're interested in attending MRM, definitely come to this meeting!
The Heart Walk is the American Heart Association's premiere event for raising funds to save lives from this country's No. 1 and No. 3 killers - heart disease and stroke. Join us to promote physical activity and heart-healthy living!
APhA-ASP Operation Heart will be taking part in the Buffalo Niagara Heart Walk on September 15th in downtown Buffalo. We will be located in the wellness tent giving blood pressures and measuring waist circumferences. If you would like to volunteer, email Sarah Lynch at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you're planning to be at the event, stop by and learn your numbers!

On another note, the Student Organization section of the P1 Orientation went fairly well. Even thought it was REALLY crowded, we were able to talk to most students and hand out APhA-ASP packets to all of them. Thank you everyone for showing up to help!
